So in our travels we’ve come across the concept of Japanese breakfast. This is something we’ve had in Japan and in places like Hawaii, too. And we’ve brought it back to our home in the States. The Japanese breakfast typically consists of a miso soup, some pickled vegetables, maybe fruit, rice and grilled fish. It’s such a lovely way to start the day. And I feel so good for the rest of the morning. Working full time, I don’t have time to make a breakfast too elaborate. But what I’ve been doing is making some noodles with steamed vegetables or pickled vegetables, maybe some shiitake mushrooms, and cutting up this Alaska Gold Smoked Sablefish and topping it with Furikake seasoning from Barnacle, another wonderful Alaskan company. Absolutely delicious. The smoked sablefish is so rich! It’s such a wonderful treat. I cut it up real thin. I do also eat the smoked sablefish with crackers and fruit as an afternoon pick-me-up, too.

After living in Southeast Alaska for more than 30 years, we have loved sablefish (or as Alaskans call it, black cod — though it’s not a cod) for a long time. It’s extremely rich but also delicate and not at all gamey tasting. And the Alaska Gold smoked snacks are completely addictive. You can throw them in eggs, chowder, or stirfries, but by the time I’m done sampling them straight from the package, there’s usually not enough left to cook with. Perfect with an IPA.

Is it the best smoked fish I’ve ever had? Yes without a doubt. I ordered ten pounds the first time and after my neighbor tried it I had to sell him half of my order and then ordered more.
